Dr. Arijit Mitra

Dr. Arijit Mitra is currently serving as Assistant Professor II in the Operations Management & Decision Science Area at XIM Bhubaneswar. He is an engineer by qualification and has completed M. Tech in Farm Machinery and Power from IIT, Kharagpur. He completed his fellow program in management (FPM) from XLRI, Jamshedpur. His doctoral thesis is in the area of Production, Operations and Decision Science. He has around 6 years of experience in industry, particularly in the automotive sector as an R&D engineer and in the manufacturing sector as a management consultant followed by around 4 years of experience in the academics. Prior to joining XIMB, he taught in BIMTECH and served as a visiting faculty in IMT Nagpur and XLRI for their Operations and Supply chain related courses. He is connected with professional forums such as Indian Institute of Materials Management (IIMM) and Association of Supply Chain Professionals (ASCP), renowned national bodies representing a wide spectrum of professionals engaged in various facets of Material Management, responsible for planning, sourcing, Logistics & Supply Chain Management.

  1. Course Description

Operations management is concerned with the production and delivery of goods and services to meet customers’ demand. Managing operations refers to the administration of best business practices in order to achieve the highest levels of effectiveness and efficiency in terms of the use of company resources. This includes the proper management of materials, machinery, technology and labor to produce high-quality goods and services that will benefit the company. Broadly speaking, operations management involves utilizing resources from staff, materials, equipment, and technology. Operations managers acquire, develop, and deliver goods to clients based on client needs and the abilities of the company.

A major challenge that almost every organization confronts is how to deliver high quality products/services to meet ever-changing customer demands in a timely and cost-effective manner. Therefore, any top executive must have a good understanding about the operations. It has also been realized that the operations function must integrate into the overall corporate planning and strategy to achieve such an advantage. Therefore, a sound understanding of operations management concepts is important for all managers.
